Hoffman says antiquated and perfectionist methods exclude people with disabilities, with physical or mental illness, or who work outside the home all day.

For some people it is impossible to organize house cleaning for several reasons and this method makes life easier for them, as they can apply it without inconvenience.

What is the 20/10 method?

Hoffman’s proposal is simple: get rid of the endless cleaning days and  modify them with short periods of work alternating with breaks. Specifically, clean for 20 minutes and rest for 10 minutes. It is therefore necessary to use a stopwatch, in order to respect the times assigned for work and rest.

During the 10-minute break we can check email, social networks, have tea or go for a walk with the dog. It is up to us to decide the way we like best to take advantage of this time, and when the alarm sounds, we get back to the opera.

Also, the founder of this system invites us to focus on the little things and not the general clutter we have in the house. For example, instead of focusing on the kitchen disaster let’s start by washing the dirty dishes.

If we take care of one thing at a time instead of thinking about everything there is to do, the results will be more rewarding.

How can the 20/10 method be applied at home?

Hoffman published the book Unf * ck your habitat: you’re better than your mess . In it he gives us some advice that we list in the following lines.

Sometimes we see clutter as great chaos and this puts us in a bad mood. We need to focus on small actions to proceed.

1. Take a picture of the before and after

When you are done, you can clearly see the results of your efforts and motivate yourself to continue with this system. In addition, you will have an eye on which are the most problematic parts and if you have forgotten to order something.

2. Order the room every day

It will take less than a minute and the benefits will be numerous. The general image of the room will completely change keeping it always clean. It is much more comforting to sleep in a tidy room.

3. Open the windows

Let the house ventilate to purify the air, eliminate bad smells and bacteria. Especially in winter, when we avoid opening them due to low temperatures.

4. Method 20/10: wash the dishes

When we finish eating it is normal to want to rest and we often end up postponing this task later or the following day. Mistaken!

Because although you are dedicated to doing something else,  you will have in your head the thought of what you have to do and you have not done. In addition, over time the dirt will make it more difficult to go away and the kitchen will fill with odors.

5. Clean the refrigerator

Start by removing everything that is dirty, out of date and that releases bad smells. Check all the containers, including those hidden behind that you might forget.

Then clean the shelves and compartments thoroughly. Finally, position things by placing the ones you often pick up in more accessible places.

6. Start with the largest spaces

If you start with the smallest spaces, you run the risk of getting tired immediately and not finishing the larger ones that you use most. Also, if you finish with the larger room earlier you will feel more fulfilled and have the motivation to continue.

7. The 20/10 method: cleaning from top to bottom

This rule applies to everything, whether it’s tall cabinets with multiple shelves or homes with more than one story. You always start cleaning from the higher compartments  in the case of furniture and from the upper floors for houses.

8. Collect everything that is on the floor

There must be nothing on the floor that does not have to be there. When you start cleaning, start looking for all those elements that need to be removed from the ground and don’t leave them there.

9. Complete the wash cycle

Hoffman draws attention to a very common mistake that many make. We wash the clothes, put them to dry and after collecting them, we leave them in the basket instead of sorting them.

In this way the circuit is incomplete and the clothes begin to accumulate to form a mountain that seems impossible to rearrange. You have to wash, dry, collect and tidy up. 

10. Clean the floor

Finally, the time has come to clean the floor, whether it’s with a damp cloth or a vacuum cleaner. Done! Now your home is shining and you still have the energy  to enjoy the day.

What are the benefits of the 20/10 method?

There are other methods of tidying up the house, such as the famous cleaning marathon. This consists of starting and stopping only when everything is in order. It can take us a whole day.

The worst part is that it is usually done on weekends, because from Monday to Friday we have other things to do. So we go to occupy those few days of rest with the cleaning and when the start of the week arrives we are already tired.

The fatigue caused by the cleaning marathon generates a negative feeling about this duty. Even if we think we will keep order, unfortunately, as the days go by, history will repeat itself. Among the advantages of the 20/10 method we can mention the following:

  • We can  keep the house clean by doing short chores every day instead of letting the clutter and dirt build up and spend a whole day cleaning.
  • Being an inclusive cleaning system, it is suitable for those suffering from any physical pain or disability.
  • Helps to adopt good cleaning habits. Remember that it takes us 21 days to create a habit and after that we can keep it on a daily basis.
