Allergy to any type of food is nothing more than the exaggerated immune response of the human body to substances capable of triggering reactions in the organism.
People with vegetable allergies have an antibody called IgE that causes these reactions. This antibody can be produced even if the vegetables have been previously consumed.
In a study called “Alergológica 2015”, conducted in Spain, it was found that 7.4% of people go to the allergist because they suffer from allergies to pollen, fruit and vegetables.
The symptoms of allergy vary, are of varying intensity and affect one or more organs of the body.
These symptoms can appear if the person consumes this type of food, be it natural or processed.
It must be taken into account that not all of us react in the same way to different compounds in food. Every body is different, and what affects one person is not necessarily harmful to others.
Allergic reactions to foods of plant origin are usually produced by some substances or molecules.
That’s why today, in our space, we offer you a small list of vegetables that can cause allergic reactions to the body.
8 Vegetables that cause allergies
Believe it or not, there are people who are allergic to carrots. If you are allergic to pollen, you will probably also be allergic to this vegetable.
This happens due to the structural similarity of its components. Pollen proteins are similar to those of carrots.
Allergic proteins from carrots do not disappear even if we cook them. The culprit is an inhalant allergen that reacts crosswise with the carrot.
Among the most common symptoms we find:
- Anaphylaxis (difficulty in breathing, low blood pressure and loss of consciousness)
- Increased heart rate
In severe cases, these symptoms can cause a person to go into a coma and even cause death.
They appear quickly after taking the vegetable, so immediate medical attention is required.
Lettuce is one of the foods most related to lipid transport protein syndrome. The intake of this vegetable is a frequent cause of allergy.
- Lettuce also produces anaphylaxis and attention should also be paid to the different pathogenic bacteria present in its leaves, which can cause disease.
If we are not allergic to this vegetable, we should still disinfect it carefully, with boiled water or vinegar, in order to eliminate these bacteria in a radical way.
This allergy is common, as celery contains an allergen similar to that of birch pollen. Raw or cooked celery can cause reactions ranging from dermatitis to anaphylaxis.
In addition, the intake of this vegetable and exposure to ultraviolet radiation can produce:
- Laryngeal edema
Although the reactions of celery in humans have not been well studied, it is recommended that celery be stopped immediately in case of strange symptoms.
Spinach allergy is one of the most common. This vegetable is rich in histamine, a chemical that acts in the body as a hormone and a neurotransmitter.
Histamine is found in spinach and is released in large quantities in inflammatory processes, which is why it is a major cause of allergies.
Onion contains a specific mineral (sulfur) which strengthens circulation, but which, in some cases, causes allergic reactions.
Onion allergy symptoms appear immediately and include:
- He retched
- Stomach cramps
- Urticaria (also by contact)
- Inflammation of the respiratory tract
- Anaphylaxis (in some cases)
Although there are very few recorded cases of this allergy, they do exist.
For some individuals the symptoms are very mild, while for others they can be fatal.

Asparagus, together with onion and garlic, belong to the Liliaceae family.
In a study conducted on asparagus allergy, it was found that people who had contact with, inhaled or ingested this vegetable, suffered from:
- Bronchial asthma (by inhalation)
- Hives (contact eczema)
