9 good reasons to quit smoking

Do you want good reasons to quit smoking? Smokers usually don’t like it when asked if they know about the effects of smoking on their health, even if, in fact, they know it all too well. However, if you are a heavy smoker or someone around you is, you may be interested in these valid reasons to quit smoking .

If you smoke, your children will smoke too

No wonder the children of smokers have a certain propensity for this habit. What is not known is that even if you quit smoking before they are born, they could develop this bad habit.

A recent study, published in the journal Pediatrics , has in fact shown that the children of smokers and former smokers have a probability ranging from 23% to 29% of becoming addicted to cigarettes, while those of non-smokers only 8%.

It was also found that even people subjected to secondhand smoke have had children with a 3.2 times greater propensity to smoke than those who have never touched a cigarette. Experts aren’t sure why children imitate their parents’ vice, but some think it’s genetics.

Reasons to stop smoking

You are inhaling more nicotine than you think

Thanks to a study carried out by the Harvard School of Public Health, it was found that nicotine levels in cigarettes increased by 11% between 1997 and 2005. Even if you try to control yourself by smoking only on weekends or less cigarettes at the day, it is very likely that the amount of nicotine consumed has remained the same.

Furthermore, some smokers tend to buy the so-called light cigarettes, considering them less harmful, but in reality they are much more dangerous.

According to an article published in the British Medical Journal , scholars have found that people who choose this type of product smoke more and more intensely, filling their lungs with a material even more toxic than that contained in traditional cigarettes.

You are contributing to worsening health conditions around the world

World tobacco sales have soared that American cigarette manufacturers earn more overseas than in the United States , according to a report in The Telegraph . The World Health Organization declares that nearly 80% of the one thousand million smokers live in poor or developing countries, less likely to regulate the sale of cigarettes.

You spend around € 1,642 per year on tobacco

A pack of cigarettes costs an average of 4 to 5 euros. According to calculations by the American Cancer Society, if you  smoke a pack a day, you will have spent around € 1,642 by the end of the year.

It weakens you

Cigarettes cause problems in the cardiovascular system by reducing the blood supply to internal organs, the heart and the whole body. Your strengths will therefore be very small. Did you know that smoking could also reduce your muscle response?

Inhaling carbon monoxide prevents your muscles from getting the oxygen they need to produce energy. The less oxygen your muscles receive, the more impaired your daily performance will be.

Reasons to quit smoking: You are fomenting crime

According to data from the World Health Organization,  most cigarettes, which oscillate between 12 and 33%, circulate on the black market. This means that the money you paid for cheaper cigarettes could now be in the hands of organized crime, corrupt government officials, or even terrorist organizations.

Illegal tobacco trafficking is a multi-million dollar business that promotes crime and corruption.

Reasons to quit smoking: you will get sick more easily

The cigarette paralyzes the body’s defense mechanisms. The chemicals in smoke cause inflammation and cell damage that weaken the immune system.

The body produces white blood cells to treat injuries, infections, and various types of cancer. Smokers have a high level of white blood cells, because when you have the habit of smoking, the body fights against the damage caused by smoking, which can lead to serious diseases in different parts of the body.

As if that weren’t enough, smoking alters the defense system of the respiratory system. For this reason, smokers have a tendency to contract simple bacterial infections more easily, such as those of Staphylococcus aureus or Haemophilus influenzae.

Smoking is equivalent to constantly exposing yourself to an X-ray machine

According to data reported by Scientific American magazine , smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for a year would be equivalent to taking a radiation dose of 0.36 mSv. This means that, absurdly, you could undergo 72 dental x-rays on the same day or fly for 106 consecutive hours, with the same consequences.

Experts say that no more than 1 mSv of radiation should be absorbed in addition to 3.1 mSv from natural sources such as the earth or the sun. If 0.36 of the daily mSv is absorbed through smoking, there is not much space left for the necessary radiographs, such as a mammogram (0.4 milisieverts).

Reasons to quit smoking: You are spreading a disease

Have you ever heard of “third hand smoke”? Unlike “second hand” smoke that occurs when non-smokers have direct contact with smoke, “third hand smoke” refers to toxic agents that remain on surfaces long after the smoker has abandoned the area.

Over time, these residues impregnate the surfaces of clothing, carpets and furniture and are immune to normal cleaning techniques. Therefore, it will not be enough to try to ventilate the various parts of the house, use fans or smoke only in special rooms.

Some scholars have advanced the hypothesis that “third-hand smoke” causes far more damage to DNA than previously thought. According to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the nitrosamines in tobacco and some chemicals found in “third-hand smoke” constitute some of the most potent carcinogens in existence.

They remain on surfaces and when it comes to clothes or carpets, they pose a serious danger especially to children.
