Cold sores, how to treat it naturally

Feel a tingling or burning sensation in the lips ; you look in the mirror and you don’t notice anything. A few days later, the pinching becomes more intense, and you notice that you have herpes. This virus, which is easy to infect and complicated to eliminate, can be avoided.

However, once it attacks your body, you can only treat it,  without eradicating it. Find out more in the following article.

The solution is a healthy immune system

Herpes is produced by a virus, which can be infected in two ways:

  • Through the mouth (kisses)
  • By sharing objects (towels, glasses, toothbrush …)
Once infected, the virus cannot be eradicated from the body, but don’t worry. It could remain dormant forever, without disturbing you. For this reason, your immune system must be strong.

If you have contracted herpes, it is likely that your defenses were not high at the time of contact with the affected person. The virus takes advantage of this to enter and settle in the body.

If you don’t want herpes to come back (it can be very painful, and really big), you need to start taking better care of your immune system. How? With a proper diet and exercise.

Other triggers of herpes are:

  • The stress
  • Exposure to the sun
  • Insomnia

Natural remedies for cold sores

Natural recipes to combat this virus are not abundant, as not much is known about them these days. However, many people have been able to get rid of herpes for good thanks to 100% natural treatments. Would you like to know what they are?

Ice

It is one of the most popular remedies for treating oral herpes. All you have to do is take an ice cube from the freezer and apply it to the area where the blister occurs.

Let it act for 10 minutes or until the ice has completely melted. Repeat this trick after two hours.

The inflamed tissue will shrink and the pain will be milder. Do not forget that you can opt for this treatment only if the vesicle is intact (later on the vesicle bursts and liquid begins to leak: this is the time when it is most easily infected).

Warm compresses

This treatment should be carried out during the second stage of herpes, i.e. when the vesicle is now open. It is important that in this phase you minimize contact with your partner or with your children, because by giving them a kiss, you would infect them. You must also separate your personal items and not allow anyone to use them.

As for the treatment based on hot packs, you can opt for:

  • A freshly ironed towel
  • A wet patch with hot water

Tea bags

Another alternative when the blister has burst. A moist tea bag will help you a lot. Prepare classic tea, red or black. Don’t throw the sachet away. Let it drain a little (otherwise you would burn yourself, and the pain would be unbearable).

Apply it on the lip, exerting a slight pressure, until the sachet has cooled. Wait 2 hours and then repeat the treatment.

Essential oils against cold sores

Choose between mint or lemon, which are the most effective in this case. Nonetheless, any other essential oil can help you.

Apply a few drops on the blister or use a cotton swab to facilitate application. You will experience immediate relief.

sugar

Do not forget that this remedy can burn a little. However, it is quite effective. Apply a few grains of sugar to the vesicle. Not only will it dry out and the pain will lessen, but you will also eliminate the fungi, viruses and bacteria from the area.

Medicinal herbs for herpes

In this case you have 2 options: one topical and another internal. The first consists in applying hyssop on the vesicle, the second in preparing a herbal tea. The most used to treat herpes are:

  • Sage
  • Valerian root
  • Mint
  • Echinacea

They have a strong antiviral effect and strengthen the immune system , making it more resistant to attack by viruses or other microorganisms.

You can also use the herbal tea for topical use. Instead of drinking it, you’ll need to soak a cotton ball in it, and then apply it to the open blister. It will dry out faster than any other treatment.

Salt against cold sores

This is the most painful technique of all. Perhaps you have already tried applying salt on herpes, and you know what we mean. You have to be strong to endure this treatment.

But it’s really worth it. You have 3 options to choose from:

Water and salt
Pour a tablespoon of salt into a bowl and add a few drops of water to form a paste. Apply it with cotton on the blister and leave it on for as long as you can. Then rinse gently with warm water. Repeat the treatment 3 times a day.

Salt and toothpaste
Instead of adding water to the mixture, as in the previous case, add a little toothpaste. Apply it to the blister overnight and rinse off the next morning.

Salt and lemon
Cut a slice of lemon and sprinkle it with salt. Place it on the vesicle and apply gentle pressure. Let the time you endure act, it is very painful! Repeat (if you can) twice a day.
