How do you grow pineapple at home?
Very well, the first thing to do is to choose a suitable pineapple for your lens. It must be a healthy fruit that is not soft to the touch and has a nice green color on the crown, not brown or other dark colors.
If you have the opportunity to buy organic pineapples, which therefore have not been treated with pesticides or other substances, even better, in fact with an organic fruit you will get another just as healthy.
Make sure that the fruit does not have dark or gray spots on the peel and that there are no insects. Basically, get yourself a pineapple in excellent condition, which will appeal to you for its healthy appearance.
The first thing to do is to detach the crown of leaves from the fruit. IS better to do it with your hands before using a knife, because it is a more natural technique and in this way you can get the roots of the plant.
If you use a knife, you risk damaging the crown and compromising the growth of a new fruit.
At this point it is necessary to eliminate the possible remains of pulp from the crown. This part of the pineapple is the area from which new fruits can be obtained, for this reason it must be cleaned well and the roots re-emerge again.
You also need to cut the underside to allow existing roots to emerge. Look at the photo above to find the small pineapple roots already present.
The second step is essential: you have to keep the crown of leaves in the water. Get a large jug that can hold the pineapple leaves.
You have to leave them in the water for at least three weeks, so that the roots come out little by little. IS It is important to change the water every two days and keep the roots away from heat sources or high temperatures. IS very simple!
After three weeks, the roots of your plant should be out. At this point it must be transferred to a vase. IS important that it is a very large vase, made of earthenware and not plastic.
At the bottom of the pot put some gravel, in this way you will favor drainage and prevent the plant from rotting.
You then have to cover the roots with earth, what you normally use for other plants. The plant does not need special care or attention, the earth must be slightly damp, not too wet, otherwise the plant will risk rotting.
Plant the pineapple wreath like any other plant and store it in a bright place, where sunlight arrives , but not too much.
You have to be patient. Pineapple will only have stronger roots after six or eight weeks. After two months they will have a greater consistency. The only thing you need to do is give the plant water twice a week.
Don’t worry if the leaves fall off, it’s normal and they will grow back. Keep in mind that during the winter the plant stops growing, it does so only in the warmer months. It will take about a year, but in the end this precious plant will give you a wonderful pineapple.
