Even if in recent times butter has not enjoyed a good reputation, a moderate consumption of this food does not imply health risks and, on the contrary, could bring several benefits thanks to many substances present in it that protect our body.
Often, people confuse natural with margarine or industrial butter sold in supermarkets, which are rich in refined polyunsaturated oils, calories, preservatives and other compounds that are not good for the body’s health.
However, if you learn to distinguish a good butter from one of inferior quality, you will enjoy the benefits of this food.
Why is butter a healthy food?
This product is packed with nutrients and saturated fats, essential for a healthy body. But it is true that you have to consume minimal portions and in combination with healthy foods. The main benefits of butter include:
- Vitamins: natural butter is a food with multiple benefits, it provides fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Vitamin A is considered essential for strengthening eyesight and the immune system. Vitamin D helps to increase the absorption of calcium and, in general, promotes many functions of the body.
- Minerals: one of the main minerals contained is selenium. It is a powerful antioxidant linked to the reduction of cancer growth, although it is not actually scientifically proven. Butter is also a good source of iodine, in a highly absorbable form.
- Fatty Acids: Butter and some of its saturated fats can have anti-cancer properties. Butter also contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is linked to cancer prevention and weight loss. In this case, the researchers clarified that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is mainly present in the milk and butter of pasture-fed cows.
- Lecithin: thanks to this substance, it protects our cells from oxidative stress and contributes to the good metabolism of cholesterol fats, among many benefits.
- Cholesterol: it is one of its main components which, despite having given it a bad reputation, is not completely to be discredited. Diseases related to high cholesterol are caused by excessive consumption of simple carbohydrates. Consequently, eating butter in small quantities is not dangerous, in fact, you can reap the benefits to improve your health and reduce the risk of developing diseases.
How to make homemade butter
Once you learn how to make butter at home, you won’t want to buy any commercially available butter that isn’t healthy at all. Just two ingredients are enough to obtain a soft and delicious butter with which to accompany many other foods.
- 1/4 of milk cream or whipped cream
- 3/4 teaspoon of salt
How is it prepared?
- Pour the cream into a container with a lid so that it does not exceed half its capacity.
- Then, with a mixer, start whipping the cream vigorously for 10 minutes or even more if necessary, until you get the desired consistency. As you blend, you will notice that a white liquid will detach from the cream as it increases in consistency. You won’t need this liquid or whey to make homemade butter. However, if you wish, you can save it for other preparations.
- Continue to blend carefully until the cream has eliminated as much serum as possible.
- Once the whey is removed, add a pinch of salt and blend for a few more minutes. Then, when the cream has thickened, remove the residual serum using a sieve. Your homemade healthy butter will be ready once all the whey is gone.
- Finally, all you have to do is keep it in the refrigerator. If stored properly, it can last up to a month.
Note: if you like, you can flavor your butter to give it a different and delicious note. For example, you can add fresh herbs such as thyme, basil, chives, among others, after having finely chopped them.
