Although it is easy to buy a chemical pesticide in any supermarket, we must think that these products are bad for our health and the environment.

1. Lemon

Lemons

Did you know that a common ingredient like lemon juice is a great alternative to chemical repellents?

The acids it contains help keep ants away from the garden and home.

Ingredients

  • One lemon
  • ½ liter of water
  • A nebulizer

Preparation

  • Squeeze the lemon and mix the juice with half a liter of water.
  • Pour the liquid into a spray bottle and spray it on the ant-overrun areas of the house.
  • You can repeat the operation several times a day if necessary.

2. Coffee grounds

It is well known that coffee grounds still retain many properties. It’s no surprise, then, that they can serve as excellent natural repellents for ants and other insects.

The repellent effect is due to their pungent odor, which bothers and repels insects.

Ingredients

  • Two tablespoons of coffee grounds (20 g)
  • A liter of water

Preparation

  • Mix two tablespoons of coffee grounds in a liter of water; spray on areas invaded by ants.
  • Repeat this at least three times a week.

3. Mint

Mint essential oil

Dried mint leaves or its essential oil are interesting natural alternatives to repel insects.

The aroma of mint, which we like so much, instead annoys the ants. In this way they will hardly enter the house.

Ingredients

  • Two used mint tea bags (4 g)
  • Mint essential oil (optional)

Preparation

  • After preparing a mint tea, open the used bags and sprinkle the leaves contained in them on the possible entry points of the ants or in the garden.
  • Alternatively, you can sprinkle some peppermint essential oil diluted in water.

4. Apple cider vinegar

The smell of vinegar is strong and is very effective in warding off ants: within a few hours they will disappear.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of apple cider vinegar (125 ml)
  • ½ cup of water (125 ml)
  • A nebulizer

Preparation

  • Mix the apple cider vinegar and water in equal parts; pour the solution into a bottle with a nebulizer.
  • Spray the liquid on the countertop, sink, windows and other affected areas.
  • For best results, repeat this every day.

5. Baking soda and sugar

Sodium bicarbonate

Sugar is an ingredient that attracts many insects. However, when combined with baking soda, it becomes lethal. It is, in fact, one of the best natural repellents for ants.

Ingredients

  • A tablespoon of baking soda (9 g)
  • A tablespoon of sugar (10 g)

Preparation

  • Mix the two ingredients in a bowl and then sprinkle them on the points from which the insects enter.
  • Repeat at least three times a week.

6. Corn flour

Corn flour has multiple uses at home and one of the most curious is its ant repellent action. It does not need to be mixed with other ingredients and can be sprinkled as often as necessary.

  • Sprinkle the product in environments such as the garden, doors and kitchen corners.

All of these eco-friendly solutions help repel ants without harming the environment. However, it is important to note that, being natural, they do not always give good results or several applications may be required before obtaining the desired effect.
